What a day! Our latest fly with a Spitfire event proved to be a great success at Headcorn on the 26th of September 2015.
Our Fly-Alongside event on the 26th September rounded up a busy week, following 2 days at Sywell Aerodrome which included 14 Spitfire experiences, 4 Harvard flights and 9 trial lessons in our Tiger Moths.
TD314 was undoubtably the star of the show, having arrived the previous day from Duxford. Flown gracefully by Brian Smith, the Spitfire departed on 2 sorties during the day, with the Devon/Dove making 5 flights in formation in genuine Battle of Britain airspace. The tours ranged from trips down to the Battle of Britain memorial at Capel-le-Ferne along the White Cliffs of Dover, to local sorties over Leeds Castle.
The de Havilland Devon/Dove was on trial for future events, and received a high number of very positive reviews by those who flew in her. The Dove itself was originally developed as a short-haul airliner as the monoplane successor to the prewar de Havilland Dragon Rapide. The Devon served as the military variant operated by the RAF, and subsequently appeared to fit the part perfectly alongside the Spitfire. The fact that each customer had their own window seat with a very wide panoramic view, coupled with the similar cruising speeds of the two aircraft, made for a perfect spectacle for our customers.
Due to the success of this event, another has been booked in for the 17th of October. Given that this will be the final event of the year spaces will be limited; to book call us on 01622 892199.
