Private Pilot’s License (PPL)

The PPL is the most popular course offered. It consists of a minimum of 45 hours of flying training including 10 hours of solo flying under supervision. There are 9 written exams to test your knowledge in subjects such as Meteorology, Navigation, Air Law and more as well as a practical assessment in your use of the aircraft’s radio. You will learn all about these subjects during ground school sessions with your instructor as well as guided self-study. Additionally, you will be required to obtain a Class 2 aviation medical before you can fly solo.

You will start off learning basic exercises such as straight and level flight, turning, climbing and descending before moving into ‘the circuit’ to practice your take-offs and landings. From there you will complete your first solo flight and progress onto longer navigational trips, travelling to new airfields along the way before completing your solo cross-country qualifying flight. At the end of the course and with the written exams passed, you will complete a skills test which is a culmination of everything you have been taught. On completion of this you will be issued with your Private Pilot’s License.

Once issued, your license will enable you to fly aeroplanes up to 5,750kg maximum take off weight and 19 passenger seats as the pilot in command (PIC) in non-commercial operations.

Light Aircraft Pilot’s License (LAPL)

The LAPL is a more restricted version of the PPL with lesser training requirements and is ideal for those who are only interested in flying light aircraft as a hobby. While the PPL is an internationally recognised license, the LAPL is only recognised within Europe.

Medical requirements also differ and a LAPL medical, instead of a class 2 is required. The course consists of a minimum of 35 hours of flight training including 6 hours of supervised solo and a shorter qualifying cross-country trip. It follows a similar syllabus to that of the PPL and on completion and license issue, allows you to act as PIC of aircraft up to 2000kg only with a maximum of 3 passengers.

Should you wish, it is also possible to convert a LAPL to a PPL at a later date.
